First and foremost is the health insurance since the health expenses is very very costly in the United States when comparing with India. It is worthy and safe to take health insurance from the day the visitor reaches the country until the day of departure.

I would recommend you to get the insurance here in USA, so that in case you need any clarifications it becomes easy to talk to the customer care.
If it is taken in India, you need to talk to the customer care there and many a times you need to follow up with the branch of the insurance office as you wont get proper answers from the customer care representative.
Another reason I recommend this is, most hospital networks wont be aware of the different international insurance companies operates in India.
I took insurance from Inbound USA. Unfortunately we ran into emergency care as my mom met with a accident in kitchen. Though we had to call them couple of times, we got the right answer also we did not end up paying so much from pocket 80% of the expenses were covered by the insurance company.
